Lucky Dog Theatre Productions presents Mr Merrick, The Elephant Man

The first ever completely factual play about Joseph Merrick

Lucky Dog Theatre Productions is a professional company from Guildford.  It consists of actors Tony Carpenter and Philip Hutchinson.  ‘Mr Merrick, The Elephant Man’ is being staged in The Keep Pub, Castle Street, at 8pm on Sunday 23rd July 2017 (tickets £10) as part of Guildford Fringe Festival.

Now in their fourth year of performing multiple shows at Guildford Fringe Festival, Lucky Dog are a regular and recommended fixture of this festival and their shows tour to other festivals and theatres throughout the country.

Joseph Merrick (better known as The Elephant Man) is possibly the most famous ‘freak’ in history.  Many stage plays and the popular film have told a romantic and often fictional account of his story.  ‘Mr Merrick, The Elephant Man’ is the first play to actually only deal with the known facts about Merrick’s final years in The London Hospital, Whitechapel and his complicated relationship with his doctor, Frederick Treves.  With a cast of just two, the use of interactive video projections and a soundtrack consisting entirely of actual Victorian recordings, the popular Lucky Dog Theatre Productions bring their affecting show back to Guildford for the first time in two years. Painstakingly researched, expect to be enlightened and moved by the stirring true story of ‘the most remarkable creature ever to draw the breath of life’.

The play was written by member Philip Hutchinson, and Brighton Fringe 2015 saw its World Premiere.  It has been touring venues nationwide since then.
