Kenneth Williams was one of the most unique and beloved figures in British comedy history. From show stealing performances on the radio in Hancock’s Half Hour and Round the Horne to twenty years of Carry On films to the darling of the chat shows, Williams was a rare talent who could turn from broad slapstick to erudite wit in a split second.
Celebrated actor Colin Elmer, who played Kenneth Williams in the 50th Anniversary Tour of Round the Horne, reprises his role in this brand new production, telling the great man’s story in his own words, using anecdotes, writing and some of the material for which the comedy legend was so well-known.
On why he wanted to mount this production director Tim Astley explains: “I have been a huge fan of Kenneth Williams since I saw my first Carry On film as a child. Producing the 50thanniversary tour of ‘Round the Horne’ gave me the opportunity to learn more about this fascinating performer and to see him brought to life by Colin, who is to my mind, the finest actor I have ever seen portray him.
“We have compiled this production using a collection of anecdotes and stories told by Williams himself during his many chat show appearances, as well as excerpts from shows like ‘Round the Horne’ and ‘Hancock’s Half Hour’ and I think it fair to say that we have captured the essence of a man who was not only and incredible actor and performer, but a fascinatingly complex and private person.”
Colin Elmer’s performance as Williams in Round the Hornewas met by universal praise. The Reading Chronicle wrote “Colin Elmer’s Kenneth Williams was hilarious and endearing” and Get West London described it as “a performance which relies on finely-observed respect rather than pure mimicry”
So join them for an evening in the company of a true cult figure.
